So far, the following people have informed us that they intend to give a talk about this topic. After each participant’s name, there is also a (preliminary) title. Feel free to change them, as the discussion evolves!

Fatma: “VERY LITTLE DAMAGE, VERY BENEFICIAL”
Catalin: 'Transport infrastructure and regional sustainable tourism in Romania. The role of rural communities.'
Frans: 'Without a positive long term and sustainably empowering economic impact for local communities, there is no chance for positive socio-cultural aspects'
Katherine: 'Can volunteering improve the socio-cultural impact of tourism to developing economies?'
Klaus: 'Why we started the international TO DO!-Contest in 1995'
Marta: 'A presentation of country through responsible behaviour towards nature and people - Slovenian way'

A hint: As this day's topic focuses on economic and socio-cultural IMPACTS of responsible travel, we are hoping you can give encouraging examples by presenting case-studies, facts and new information. Please try to be to-the-point and avoid unfounded generalisations. As the economic aspects of sustainability are often neglected in the responsible travel debate, this information will be useful to all participants when spreading awareness in their home countries!

Please tell the others a little bit more about how you intend to cover the topic in your presentation. This way, we can avoid unnecessary repetition and make the most of the 15 minute talks!

Julia Jänis: In my presentation I will discuss the importance of co-operating with local tourism enterprises in a destination from a sustainable, fair and ethical perspective. The presentation draws on my PhD study in Namibia where due to apartheid history almost 95 % of all private tourism enterprises are owned by the white, privileged minority. Indigenous enterprises in this presentation refer to black owned enterprises (not those owned by indigenous peoples). I will discuss what specific benefits there are in the local socio-economic context if indigenous enterprises are favored and how this could be utilised in promoting sustainable tourism.

Hi everybody!

In my presentation I would like to share my experiences about socio-cultural significance of rural community-based tourism in 'Fair Trade Coffee Trail' in Nicaragua. These experiences are based on my master thesis study from 2009. Tourism was introduced to these three communities of San Ramón in order to reduce the economic vulnerability of the poor coffee producers, to create new contacts with the Fair Trade coffee consumers and to bring new possibilities to participate for women and young people.

By taking part in this workshop, I would like to discuss about the possibilities and challenges to support active local participation and social justice through tourism development – as the principle of local participation has many times turned out to be challenging to promote in practice. I experience that important questions are how the tourism developers can enhance local actors’ knowledge and skills about tourism, new contacts and cultural pride, which all can prepare local people to take advantage of further opportunities.

I have understood that we should dicuss about the concrete impacts of these kinds of alternative forms of tourism. Please let me know if you have any suggestions/ comments regarding my presentation!

See you soon!

All the best
Emily

Sorry, I made a mistake and wrote this presentation on Hash tag although I do not know what it really means.
The title of my discussion is: Slovenia is green! I love my country and this is why, everywhere and by everyone present its beauty. Slovenia is a small country with few inhabitants, so take care how we are developing travel. I spoke about the Slovenian way of responsible travel as a good practice for both tourists and the local population. Much has been done and much will be, if we want to become a country where we all from the responsible tourism well lived.
See you soon,
Marta

I have been thinking about this topic, for which I had in principle no presentation and I think I would like to do a short presentation if there is any time left.
